This famous
illustration of a thylacine pair was drawn by the German wildlife artist
Gustav Mützel. It first appeared in Alfred E. Brehm's "Tierleben"
("Life of Animals"), 1877. It was later featured in the 4th
edition of "Meyer's Konversations Lexicon", 1888. Mützel
was a painter and draftsman from Berlin who specialized in animal subjects.
His illustrations of mammals and birds are well-known through the publications
of zoologists such as Alfred E. Brehm and Christian L. Brehm.
