City Park Zoo [Launceston] (continued):

McGowan is acknowledged as having successfully reared at least four thylacine families (1886, 1889, 1893 & 1898) in captivity, the females having been captured with young in their pouches.

Much to William McGowan's regret, City Park never achieved the status of being an accredited zoo.  Today, all that remains of the former zoo is a modern monkey exhibit located to the left of the main entrance on Tamar Street.  No plaque exists to commemorate the zoo's historic past.
