Welcome to The Thylacine Journey, a division of The Thylacine
Museum. Through a series of pictorial travelogues, this website
will present my ongoing natural history studies of the thylacine or Tasmanian
tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus). Along with its parent site,
The Thylacine Museum, the primary function of The Thylacine Journey is
to assist in heightening public awareness and appreciation of this unique
marsupial.
Hopefully the first
of many to come, chapter one of this site describes my October 2002
visit to the Australian Museum (Sydney). There, a DNA extraction
project was begun in 1999 to recover the complete genome of the thylacine
from tissues which have been preserved in alcohol for nearly a century
and a half. It is hoped that eventually, thylacines could be cloned
using this preserved genetic material. |
