Here are 10 books that I recommend for those who have a specific interest in Thylacoleo, Australian vertebrate palaeontology, and the natural history of Australia in general.  Most of these are hard to find and/or out of print, but if you do some research on the internet and elsewhere, you may be able to locate some of them.  Also, major university libraries may have copies of some of these available for loan.

CARNIVOROUS MARSUPIALS
(Volume II)

Michael Archer (ed.)
Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales - 1982
ISBN:  0 9599951 3 7
pages 397-804 of a two volume set

The second volume of the publication CARNIVOROUS MARSUPIALS is a valuable reference for all who are interested in the family Thylacoleonidae.  A collection of articles by leading authorities on the marsupiocarnivores, it contains a number of important technical works on the study of thylacoleonids.  It has proven very useful in my research for this web site, and I much thank all of the authors who contributed the papers included in this reference.  This is a very rare book now, and I wish you luck should you pursue locating a copy.

284 pages

A landmark reference in Australian palaeontology, KADIMAKARA presents descriptions and illustrations of 32 extinct Australian vertebrates in a concise, clearly understandable way that will interest both the casual reader and dedicated enthusiast.  Of note are the beautifully executed colour paintings by noted natural history artist Frank Knight.

VERTEBRATE PALAEONTOLOGY OF AUSTRALASIA

P.V. Rich, J.M. Monaghan,
R.F. Baird and T.H. Rich (eds.)
Pioneer Design Studio for and in co-operation with Monash University Publications Committee - 1996
ISBN:  0909674 36 1
1437 pages

A large technical reference that is invaluable to anyone in need of a work containing the entire scope of what is known of Australia's vertebrate record.  It is certainly one of the most comprehensive references available on the subject overall.

VERTEBRATE PALAEONTOLOGY OF AUSTRALASIA
WILDLIFE OF GONDWANA
WILDLIFE OF GONDWANA
The 500-Million-Year history of Vertebrate Animals from the Ancient Southern Supercontinent.

P. V. Rich and T.H. Rich
F. Coffa & S. Morton (principal photography)
Reed - 1993
ISBN:  0 7301 0315 3
276 pages

In my opinion, one of the best publications on Australian vertebrate palaeontology yet produced.  Not only is it a superbly rendered account of what is known of vertebrate history of the ancient southern land mass, it also has a great profusion of beautiful colour photographs.

PREHISTORIC ANIMALS OF AUSTRALIA

Susan Quirk and Michael Archer (eds.)
Peter Schouten (illus.)
The Australian Museum - 1983
ISBN:  0 7240 1527 2
80 pages

An excellent introduction to 30 of the prehistoric vertebrates which once lived in Australia, this book is based upon the stunningly detailed life reconstructions of Peter Schouten, one of Australia's most renowned natural history artists.  The greyscale paintings of Thylacoleo carnifex, Thylacinus potens and Glaucodon ballaratensis are among my personal favorites.
