A thylacine pursues a Brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) in this circa 1968 illustration by famed natural history artist Jay H. Matternes.  As the Brush-tailed rock-wallaby is found only on the Australian mainland, this scene can be interpreted as being set in an ancient time, when the thylacine ranged across much of the continent.

Matternes is a skilled illustrator with many years of experience in portraying both living and extinct species.  For decades, his works have been displayed in museums and galleries in the United States and abroad, as well as featured in many publications, including those of the National Geographic Society and Time-Life.
