A drawing by Friedrich Specht, with a thylacine observing a group of kiwis (Apteryx sp.), a genus of flightless birds which is in fact unique to New Zealand and does not exist in Tasmania.  The image was featured in the German magazine "Das Buch für Alle" (The Book for Everyone), 1890.

Another of Specht's thylacine illustrations, entitled "Zebra-Wolf or Pouched Dog", can be seen here.
